Unauthorised "Facsimile Reprint (120 Copies) September, 1970" (original 1970 edition limited to 120 copies, printed by Alan Anderson). "Not much is known of the poem's supposed author, Robert Sempill (or Semple) of Beltrees (1595?-1659)," writes the Burns scholar G. Ross Roy: ". . . the only work for which he deserves to be remembered is 'The Piper' - a.k.a. "The Epitaph of Habbie Simpson, / Who on his drone bore bony flags; / He made his Cheeks as red as Crimson, / And babbed when, he blew the bags"; written c1640 and first published as a broadside, c1698. It revived a stanza form known as Standard Habbie which was taken up by Robert Fergusson and then, famously, by Robert Burns. "Like Fergusson," writes Roy, "Burns used the form for a variety of purposes: to celebrate a mouse, a mountain daisy, or a louse; he used it for epistles, including those to Lapraik and Ranking; he used it to welcome a bastard wean, or to destroy a Holy Willie; he used it to sing the praises of a haggis; even in its traditional use, as we see in 'Tam Samson's Elegy,' Burns proved time and again how thoroughly he had mastered the lessons he learned from the earlier Scots poetry.".

This book presents a historically significant and intriguing collection of previously unpublished poems from the late 16th century, attributed to the prolific yet enigmatic poet Robert Sempill. It provides a unique glimpse into a tumultuous period of Scottish history, the regency of the Earl of Moray following the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots. These poems, known as 'Ballads of Public Affairs,' offer a remarkable insight into the political and religious tensions of the period, expressing both reverence for the Scottish monarchy and strong support for the Protestant Reformation. The author's powerful, often scathing criticisms of the ruling elite reveal the widespread anger and despair felt by ordinary Scots during a time of great upheaval. This book is not merely a collection of historical documents; it also sheds light on the literary culture of the 16th century, showcasing the skill and versatility of a master poet whose work is finally being made available to modern readers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
