Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First English Translation. Two volume set, each with brown cloth to boards with brown leather at spine and corners of boards. Gilt line decoration to front and rear boards. Gilt lettering on red and green labels withing raised bands on the spine. Top of page edges are gilt, which is faded with age. The delightful bindings are relatively new and certainly not contemporary with the volumes themselves. Previous owner's book plates in side front covers of both volumes. The volumes are undated but the printing uses the 'long s' (similar to a non-crossed f). Later editions of the volumes, also published by Thorn of Exeter are dated as being of around 1785, suggesting that these volumes are an earlier publication, possibly a first English translation of Bartholemy's 1779 work. The contents of the books are clean and tidy throughout, with the exception of a single horizontal closed tear at page 73/74 of Volume I. The tear runs from the fore-edge of the page to the hinge. A previous owner has attempted to repair the tear using sellotape, or similar, which has come away, leaving the usual brown stain to the paper. This has now been stabalised using pH Neutral repair tape. The damage only interferes with the text in a minor way, and is fully legible. Apart from this, the volumes are in excellent condition. A very scarce and early English translation of this major work by the noted French Jesuit priest and spiritual writer. 310 pages and 299 pages.
