Cave drawings indicate that we have had memories for a large part of human existence. The cave drawings are evidence that cavemen had a memory and could visualize. Evolution favored those that could remember things. Like where the food was, or "WHEN" the salmon ran, or to prepare for the cold weather that will surely come. Being able to imagine was also a powerful advantage. Imagination created the notion of the "future."
