The first half of the collection is prison poetry but one can find no mention in his various biographies of time imprisoned. He is a prolific and respected historian, novelist and poet living now in Mexico. His book on the Irish Battalion in Mexico was the basis of the film "One Man's Hero" which starred Tom Berenger.
