Through a richly informative juxtaposition of prose and picture, we experience the considerable dangers of hunting and harpooning the great whale, and we sense the grisly aftermath of cutting whale blubber into blanket pieces, horse pieces and bible leaves, to be rendered into oil. Here too, are the awed children accompanying their whaling captain fathers, and the young Hawaiians who signed on as crewmen for the money - a few cents a day. Whaling was not for the tender-hearted. Simpson's gutsy prose and Goodman's eye-riveting photographs and layouts show why a sensitive man like Herman Melville found the life so unromantic that he jumped ship not once, but twice, and yet was so possessed by his experiences that he spent the rest of his life writing about them.
