Capot-Rey a fait sa thèse sur la Sarre et participa à la rédaction d'une "Géographie Lorraine" qui fut le point de départ de nombreuses recherches. Puis il occupa la chaire de Géographie à l'Université d'Alger en 1935 et devint un spécialiste des Etudes Sahariennes.
