For many collectors and fans of science fiction, the main thing in this issue is an early science fiction story by Julian Hawthorne titled "June 1993" in which the protagonist visits the United States 100 years in the future. That meant 1993. The author imagines a vastly different world, including boat-like vehicles that travel through the air, high above the landscape. In one of the fine illustrations by Dan Beard (of Boy Scouts fame) a group of people are on a luxury cruise in the flying boat. They look much like an assortment of hippies and bohemians. Julian Hawthorne was the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sophia Peabody. See the Table of Contents, provided below for a complete list of the issue's contents. The textblock is tightly bound; however, the untrimmed edges are significantly darkened and heavily toned, bearing consistent dust-soiling. Internally, there is pronounced browning and offsetting to the front pastedown and free endpapers, likely resulting from poor-quality acidic paper or a previous dust-wrapper. Scattered foxing is evident throughout the preliminary leaves, most notably marring the half-title and title page, though the central text remains crisp, legible, and largely unmarked. Catalogue Note: This volume represents the eighth instalment in the ambitious encyclopedic anthology of nineteenth-century verse. Most critically for collectors, this specific volume features the first appearance in a book of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Dolben died at the age of 19. He had been about to go up to Oxford. Robert Bridges was his cousin. Dolben was the object of affection (possibly even obsession) for Gerard Manley Hopkins.
