This volume describes the excavation of one of these wrecks in 1972-1975 by the Texas Antiquities Committee?an intensive investigation of perhaps the oldest shipwreck yet given scientific study in the Western Hemisphere. The volume represents a rather unique demonstration of the interdependence of historical and archeological investigation, and how they complement each other. The results of the archeological investigation, presented by J. Barto Arnold Ill, reveal much about the precious metals and other cargo carried by Spanish ships of the sixteenth century, as well as navigational methods and equipment. Advanced underwater archeological techniques are discussed. The archeological findings are illuminated and set in context with the aid of thousands of pages of documentary material gleaned from Spanish archives. Robert S. Weddle has woven this material into a historical narrative that broadens the concept of sixteenth-century maritime activity. The story of the three ships is dealt with in the context of the period ? its politics, the effects of New World trade on Europe's economy, the conduct of trade and navigation with the Indies, the impact of the loss of the three ships on the Spanish economy, the shipwreck victims and their struggle for survival, and the episode's implications for the future of New World discovery, exploration, and settlement.
