Añadir al carrito8vo (145 × 230 mm). 2 vols. 55 ff. 66 ff. Urdu lithographic printing on paper. Naskh with headings in larger display hand. Illustrated throughout with full-page plates of crowns, turbans, insignia, flags, medals, seals, and coats-of-arms. Decorative cartouches and frames. Later red half morocco, spines titled in gilt. A rare Indo-Islamic lithographic production issued under the auspices of the Government of Bhopal, presenting a comprehensive visual compendium of insignia, emblems, and regalia from South Asia, the Islamic world, Europe, and antiquity. Conceived as an ambitious official handbook, the work reflects the desire of Bhopal State to situate itself within a broader visual and symbolic culture of sovereignty at the turn of the twentieth century. Its publication in Urdu demonstrates the role of vernacular scholarly and administrative languages in shaping a modern idiom of comparative heraldry. - Volume I (printed in April 1904) opens with an errata leaf (Ghalatnama-i Kitab Taj wa Nishan) placed immediately after the title-page, and proceeds to illustrate the arms, emblems, banners, and coats-of-arms of Indian princely states including Bhopal, Murshidabad, Patiala, and Jaipur. These are set in parallel with insignia of the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and selected European orders of chivalry, as well as the national flags of Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and China, thereby situating South Asian traditions of sovereignty within a global frame of reference. - Volume II (1906) likewise begins with an errata leaf, and broadens the scope to include royal headgear and insignia of Mughal and other Indian dynasties, together with examples from Iranian and European monarchies. Further sections are devoted to ancient crowns, medals, flags, and seals, highlighting both historical depth and cultural breadth. The volume concludes with contemporary press notices on the reception of the first book, underscoring the awareness with which this project was framed as a landmark publication. - The illustrations, produced in monochrome lithography, exhibit the tonal range typical of early 20th-century North Indian presswork. The two volumes, taken together, represent an exceptional exercise in the codification and visualisation of emblems of sovereignty. They bear witness not only to the cosmopolitan court culture of Bhopal, but also to the broader intellectual project of cataloguing symbols of power across regions and eras in an Indo-Islamic context. - Generally well preserved, but a few deep gashes clipped into the edges of volume I without substantial loss to text or images. - Ownership inscription of Aslam Mahmud, dated 3 December 1973, in both volumes.
