Añadir al carritoOn an album leaf ca. 99 x 132 mm. Together with a full-length role portrait photograph of Stevens in the title role of Ambroise Thomas's Mignon ca. 249 x 205 mm., with "890" handstamped to verso. Very slightly worn; signature very slightly smudged; very small label to verso. Risë Stevens was an "American mezzo-soprano of Norwegian origin. She sang with the New York Opera-Comique before becoming a pupil of Anna Schoen-René. Approached by the Metropolitan, she declined and sailed for Europe to study with Marie Gutheil-Schoder. She then made her formal operatic début in Prague in 1936 as Thomas' Mignon; she also sang with the Vienna Staatsoper and in Buenos Aires. Returning to the USA, she made her début with the Metropolitan on tour in Philadelphia in 1938 as Octavian, appearing a month later in New York as Mignon. She remained with the company until 1961 but also sang with other companies (including Glyndebourne in 1939 and, as Cherubino, 1955). Her warm, lyric voice can be heard on studio and off-the-air recordings of her Cherubino, Carmen, Mignon, Delilah and Octavian." Max de Schauensee and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Signed.

Añadir al carritoINSCRIBED by Ms Stevens. 9-7/8" x 8" "One of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera, New York-born mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens made her debut with the company in 1939 as Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". Her other notable roles in 21 years with the company included the two characterizations most associated with her, the title role in Bizet's "Carmen" and Dalila in Saint-Saens's "Samson et Dalila." Furthermore, Ms Stevens is known for literally saving the entire 1961 season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations, a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene, and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later, the entire season was reinstated on schedule demonstrating notables such as President Kennedy were not immune to the entreaties of the Met's attractive reigning mezzo-soprano. A great beauty as well as a great singer, she also enjoyed one of the more successful careers of the many opera singers who made films, most notably in "The Chocolate Soldier" opposite Nelson Eddy and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald. She was also something of a fixture on early TV, appearing frequently on such programs as "The Bell Telephone Hour" & "The Voice of Firestone," where she sang both operatic arias & popular songs. She also appeared on one of the first telecasts from the Met, in 1954, singing her favored role of Carmen opposite one of her most frequent Don Joses, Richard Tucker." [IMDb]. Faint dimple in lower left corner. Very Good. Now housed in a clear archival mylar sleeve.
