From preface to the original 1869 edition: `I had always felt that there were two points which, by writers maintaining the sanctity of the Sabbath, had been left inconveniently obscure. Of these one was the actual nature of the Sabbath observance which prevailed among the Israelites under the Old Testament. The other was the period of transition between the resurrection of our Lord and the general spread of Christianity after the destruction of the Jewish commonwealth. I have endeavoured to bring both these points of inquiry into clear light, and to show their bearing on the argument. I believe that a pharisaic spirit in our Churches, and a rabbinical, and therefore anti-Christian, method of expounding the Law of the Sabbath, have done not a little harm to the holy cause of true Sabbath-keeping--have gone far towards bringing a reproach on the cause of Sabbath sanctity before the general public, and especially the working poor of our country. If High Church laxity has done harm in one way, the hyper-legalism and hard sanctimony of extreme Puritanical literalness have operated almost as injuriously in another way. At the same time I believe that the rest and worship of the Sabbath are among the most blessed of all institutions for the race, and are to be maintained on the basis of a Divine law--the fourth commandment.'
