Stevenson (1930-2021) was elected to the Senate in 1970 and served until 1981. Among the Senate committees he served on was the Banking Committee and as Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Finance, in which capacity he often visited Asia. Interestingly, a comment about Stevenson's father, the Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate, appears on page seven.

During their visit they were involved in discussions with Japanese from all walks of life. The discussions, on a very wide range of topics including conformism, literacy, the American occupation, sexual inhibition, student political movements, China, suicide, bureaucracy, prostitutes, curiosity, sense of status and female emancipation, make for very interesting reading.
