In 1834 maakte hij een vertaling van de Reynaerttekst uit het Comburgse handschrift, in 1836 gaf hij een wetenschappelijke Reynaerteditie uit. (.) De vertaling uit 1834, uitgegeven bij A.B. van Han en zoon te Eeklo, noemt Reynaertspecialist Rik Van Daele 'een van de scharnierpunten uit de Reynaertbewerkingsgeschiedenis'. Het werk vond weerklank tot in Duitsland. (.) Willems wapent zich met de Reynaert tegen de Franse macht.
