His earlier book - DECK AND PORT; OR, INCIDENTS OF A CRUISE IN THE UNITED STATES FRIGATE CONGRESS - was an interesting narrative of a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia in October of 1845, to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and ending at California about nine months later.
