Bound in original blindstamped brown cloth with gilt decoration stamped on front cover, gilt lettering on spine.All edges gilt. Foxing to title page. Discreet, ubnobtrusive marginalia on a few pages. The name of a former owner is inked out on his small bookplate on the front pastedown, as is his written name on the front free endpaper. Old repairs to joints, which are starting, a couple nicks to cloth, corners worn. Despite detracting qualities, a well bound first edition of George Cattermole's engravings. Best known for his illustrations in Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge, for which he received direction directly from Charles Dickens, George Cattermole collaborated with his brother Richard on historical "annuals," as they were known. They depicted significant chapters in British history, often presenting medieval, chivalric and other romantic themes. This was to be the first of a series, and the book ends noting it's the end of the first volume.
