Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, with the supralibros (wolf passant collared and chained with Garter motto) of George Granville Leveson-Gower, first Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833) to both boards, A.E.G. Lightly rubbed and marked, spine sunned. Armorial bookplate to FEP, offsetting, scattered spotting. The first edition of a study of the lives and works of Gower and Chaucer, collected by, and with an extensive introduction from Henry John Todd (1763-1845), a cleric and scholar best known for his editing of Milton. The introduction contains descriptions of those 'authentick documents' referenced by Todd when composing his biographies, among them a Manuscript of Francis Thynne, the Will of Gower, and those works reprinted within, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Gower's Confessio Amantis.
