Decorative Leather. Condición: Good -. First Edition. This is an ex-library volume and has name stamping on the backs of each plate illustration (likely to discourage theft). 11 issues (missing March) bound in one volume without covers or advertisements. Most articles are short (a page or two). Quarto, 10 2/3" tall, viii + 563 pages (minus 48 pages of missing March issue) plus 17 steel plate engravings; black 3/4 leather over brown cloth. This is a good minus volume overall, exterior worn, hinges broken and covers loose, exterior corners rubbed and bumped, and a hole (like a small caliber bullet) in the front cover upper corner that is evident to the endpaper and fly leaf but not in the interior (this was likely another theft inhibitor as the volume was wired to the bookshelf; interior binding solid, text paper clean, but most margins are lightly foxed and foxing visible on blank reverse of most steel plates, paper lightly yellowed. This is the regular publisher edition. It was common for publishers to print such volumes from the original periodical plates before melting them down to make new plates. The Ladies' Repository was a monthly periodical issued by the Methodist Episcopal Church and published original and reprints of literature, poetry, biography and criticism and moral advice. Note: overseas shipping is prohibitively expensive at present.

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. First Edition. This fairly rare second edition presents 27 classes of animals for examination. While not a technical textbook, it is an examination of animal behavior, natural history, and moral instruction, presenting short narratives and anecdotes designed to teach both scientific curiosity and ethical lessons. The tone is typical of Methodist juvenile literature of the period: uplifting, didactic, and aimed at shaping character through stories of animal intelligence, loyalty, instinct, and courage. The structure is episodic; each chapter focuses on a specific animal or behavior, using real or embellished anecdotes to illustrate traits such as bravery, affection, cunning, or perseverance. Previous owner inscription on first page. Fairly heavy foxing, dog-ears, etc. A well-enjoyed copy but still fairly solid. Appears to be a second edition 1857, as Swormstedt & Poe publishers transitioned to Hitchcock & Walden in the 1860s. There are other books with similar title, misconstrued as later versions of this book from the 1880s on, many illustrated, are incorrectly listed as first or second editions of THIS book. The only two books in the Fireside Reading series (Animals, Birds & Fishes) were published in 1856-1857. Hard cover edition. 416 pages. Dimensions: 4.75" by 6.5". Published by Swormstedt & Poe, Cincinnati, OH Copyright 1856, 2nd printing, 1857. Dark Blue binding. Cover defect(s): Some scratches/scuffing. Some chipping. Moderate corner/edge damage. Some spine cover damage. Page defect(s): Some writing. Some dog eared pages. Moderate foxing. Some soiling/smudges from handling. 1 Pound Media Shipping Rate with Multiple Product Orders. (Min Shipping Rate 1 Pound per Order). Order More and SAVE! Genre(s): Science / Fauna / Nature / English. (B87).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original 1855 book binding six months of the monthly magazine, "Ladies Repository". January thru August 1855. Missing pages 1 and 2 from January. Pages 3-760 are all intact and sequential. The best thing about this book are the b/w etchings, full page, frame worthy. WONDERFUL art work in these etchings. Book as some foxing which is age expected. Overall, marbled boards on this hardback are in good condition even with some shelf wear. Leather spine binding and title on spine has faded. Historic, massive. (BR) Box 310.
