Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. x+173+[5 ad] pages with tables, diagrams and indexes. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published in 1954. Richard Réti was an Austro-Hungarian, later Czechoslovakian chess player, chess author, and composer of endgame studies. He was one of the principal proponents of hypermodernism in chess. With the exception of Nimzowitsch's book My System, he is considered to be the movement's foremost literary contributor. One of the top players in the world during the 1910s and 1920s, he began his career as a combinative classical player, favoring openings such as the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4). After the end of the First World War, however, his playing style changed, and he became one of the principal proponents of hypermodernism, along with Aron Nimzowitsch and others. With the exception of Nimzowitsch's book My System, he is considered to be the movement's foremost literary contributor. He had his greatest early successes in the period 1918 through 1921, in tournaments in Kaschau (Koice; 1918), Rotterdam (1919), Amsterdam (1920), Vienna (1920), and Gothenburg (1921). In 1925 Réti set a world record for blindfold chess with 29 games played simultaneously. He won 21, drew 6, and lost 2. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped and rubbed, spine sunned else very good.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Widely regarded as the best chess book ever written, Masters of the Chessboard, discusses the playing styles of each of the leading grandmasters of history up until that time. Richard Reti was one of the strongest and certainly was the most original player of all time. He defeated at least once almost every leading player of his era. He defeated Capablanca, Alekhine, Euwe, Rubinstein, Bogoljubov and Tartakower in tournament games. He invented new and successful opening systems and brilliant endgame studies. He was also a gifted and entertaining writer. In this book, Reti examines the technique of each of the great masters of his era and explains what enabled them to reach the top levels of competitive chess. This 2008 edition includes a new introduction explaining Reti's contributions to modern chess theory.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Modern Ideas in Chess is a series of 45 essays dealing with the evolution of game, its leading players, their ideas and contributions to their respective periods. The chronology starts in the Romantic era of Anderssen and Morphy, continues through the Classical School of Steinitz, Tarrasch, Lasker, and runs to the dawn of the Hypermodern Revolution; the 70-year stretch from 1852 to 1922. Working in small chunks Reti had to be selective in what he extracted from each player and period. Plus the individual elements all had to tie in with the larger canvass Reti was painting for his readers. You don't have to get too far into the book to realize that Reti was a creative artist using the tension of chess ideas to reflect the larger intellectual struggle of mankind. How does Reti do it? A solid chess foundation obviously helps, also keen observation of the human experience coupled with a powerful command of language. Together these serve up indelible images that stick in the mind of the reader and lift this work far above the ordinary. Modern Ideas in Chess is one of the rare books that transcends the time frame in which it was written. It stands on its own, timeless, one of the true classics in the literature of the game. Popular author Bruce Alberston has converted the older descriptive notation to modern algebraic and added many diagrams to produce an outstanding modern 21st Century Edition of this timeless classic.
