Die Elegie von REITZENSTEIN fand von allen Werther-Gedichten die größte Verbreitung und wurde als Lied in zahlreiche Liedsammlungen aufgenommen. . 1776 fand in Wetzlar eine Prozession zu JERUSALEMs Grab statt, bei der . passenderweise auch 'Lotte bey Werthers Grab' [gesungen wurde]." (A.Müller-Scherf, S.120, in: Goethes Werther auf der Bühne, Katalog zur Ausstellung Wetzlar 2015). Das Gedicht als Rezeptionsergebnis von GOETHEs Werther erfuhr dadurch seinerseits eine große Wirkungsgeschichte." (ebda S.117). Über den Verfasser ist fast nichts bekannt, auch über sein(e)n Vorname(n) herrscht Unklarheit (vgl. Kippenberg). Das Gedicht wurde im gleichen Jahr wieder abgedruckt in "Rheinischer Most".
