The title is a colloquial reference to the red coats of the British infantry and the bloodied backs that resulted from flogging — a disciplinary practice central to the eighteenth-century military experience Hargreaves is examining. The book covers a period of one hundred and twenty-eight years of British military and naval presence in the western hemisphere, opening with the mid-seventeenth-century Caribbean campaigns and closing with the defeat at Yorktown and the end of the American Revolutionary War. The Dull's Books catalogue description confirms it includes the naval aspects of the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War alongside the land campaigns, giving it a combined arms scope unusual in military histories of the period. The organizing principle is social and experiential rather than purely operational.
