From the blurb: "The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, greatly venerated by Russian people, the patron Icon of St Petersburg, appeared in the town of Kazan in 1579. In 1612 it was with the army of Princes Minin…and Pozharsky liberating Moscow from Polish invaders. Since then it belonged to the Romanov dynasty and was kept in the Kremlin. A century later Peter I translated it to the St. Alexander Nevsky Monastery in his new capital, St. Petersburg. There the icon worked numerous wonders, consoled and protected those who addressed their prayers to the Mother of God. Emperor Paul I built a majestic cathedral specially for the icon which became one of St. Petersburg's principal churches. In front of it Metropolitan Ambrosius blessed Russian soldiers leaving to the war with Napoleon with this icon on July 17,1812. The icon protected the city in the dreadful period of world war II. During the siege of the city a religious procession with the icon went along the frontline and the enemy could never cross it." Foot of spine rubbed, otherwise Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.
