Ihr ist es zu verdanken, daß Ruinen antiker und mittelalterlicher Städte auf dem Meeresgrund gefunden wurden. Die vom Meer überflutetes Städte lagen einst an den Ufern des Schwarzen und des Mittelmeeres der Ägäis und der Adria, des Asowschen und des Kaspischen Meeres. In diesem Buch wird den Ursachen des Unterganges nachgegangen, die vor altem auf geodynamische Prozesse zurückgeführt werden. Diese Ursachen werden auch heute noch beobachtet. Besonders Venedig, das einst auf Pfählen erbaut wurde, wird immer wieder durch Hochwasser heimgesucht. Diese Stadt auf den 100 Inseln ist aber auch durch das Absinken im Wasser der Lagune bedroht. Nach der Überflutungskatastrophe vom 4. November 1966 forderte die UNESCO ihre Mitgliedstaaten zur großzügigen Unterstützung der Maßnahmen zur Rettung der Kulturschätze auf. Seitdem wurden verschiedene hydrotechnische Projekte zum Schutz Venedigs vorgeschlagen, aber wenig wurde inzwischen realisiert. Venedig eine versinkende Stadt? Eine viel größere Fläche ist im Nordwesten Europas gefährdet: Mehr als ein Viertel des Territoriums der Niederlande sind niedriger als der Meeresspiegel und wird ständig von Überschwemmungen bedroht. Es kommt, daß das Meer in den Buchten tief in das Festland eindringt und daß weite Landstriche durch Mündungshochwasser von Rhein. Maas und Schelde gefährdet sind.
