How can the doctor enlarge his area of vision to include not only the physical disease and its progress but also the patient as a human being? How do factors other than the physical disease itself affect hospital care? What is the impact of the illness on the sick person and on his family? From different perspectives-August Hollingshead's background is in sociology and Raymond Duff's in medicine-the authors seek to examine these questions and to suggest vital changes.
