The following comments, however, are concerned only with the first part, since a better understanding of the original sources can advance our knowledge of Solon. Our aim must be to find out what an intelligent and informed Greek during the classical period knew and thought of Solon. The contemporary tradition of the sixth century is lost, except for fragments of the poems, and the later tradition represented mainly by Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch evidently goes back to sources of the fourth century.
