Condición: New. 632, col illus. 205x130mm. HB. NEW. . English edition. This guide is the third volume in a series on Hymenoptera of Europe. After a short introduction to this order of insects, the book provides a wealth of information on the bumblebees of Europe, northern Africa, the Caucasus and the Middle East, covering the most recent scientific advances. A key allows the identification of the 14 subgenera of bumblebees present in this region. Then, for the first time, there are detailed identification keys for the 79 species of bumblebees found in Europe and neighbouring countries. Each species is presented with all its geographic variations as well as with notes on its ecology, behaviour, flower preferences and conservation status. Original photos are included for each of the West Palaearctic region species. Some extremely rare bumblebees are pictured for the very first time. The book also features many colour plates to help readers recognise over 240 forms and subspecies. Accessible to non-specialists, this is an invaluable reference guide to have in the field to discover the diversity of these magnificent pollinators!(A French edition is also available. Bumblebees represent one of the most important groups of pollinators. In addition to their ecological and economic relevance, they are also a highly charismatic group which can help to increase the interest of people in realizing, enjoying and conserving natural systems. However, like most animals, bumblebees are sensitive to climate. In Climatic Risk and Distribution Atlas of European Bumblebees, maps depicting potential risks of climate change for bumblebees are shown together with informative summary statistics, ecological background information and a picture of each European species. Thanks to the EU FP7 project STEP, the authors gathered over one million bumblebee records from all over Europe. Based on these data, they modelled the current climatic niche for almost all European species (56 species) and projected future climatically suitable conditions using three climate change scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100. While under a moderate change scenario only 3 species are projected to be at the verge of extinction by 2100, 14 species are at high risk under an intermediate change scenario. Under a most severe change scenario as many as 25 species are projected to lose almost all of their climatically suitable area, while a total of 53 species (77% of the 69 European species) would lose the main part of their suitable area. Climatic risks for bumblebees can be extremely high, depending on the future development of human society, and the corresponding effects on the climate. Strong mitigation strategies are needed to preserve this important species group and to ensure the sustainable provision of pollination services, to which they considerably contribute. Sofia, Moscow. Pensoft. 236 pp., color photos, color & b/w illustrations, color distribution maps, color tables, hardcover gr. 8 [16.7 x 23.7 cm].

This guide is the first volume of a series on Hymenoptera of Europe. In its first part a general presentation is given on their morphology, ecology, evolution and methods for establishing a collection of specimens. We also propose a key for the identification of all superfamilies recorded on the European continent. The guide then develops a comprehensive review of knowledge on wild bees from Europe and neighbouring regions, taking the latest scientific advances into account. This diversity is divided into more than 2000 species distributed in 77 genera throughout the territory covered. The book deals with the biology, morphology, ecology and conservation of European wild bees. It offers the first illustrated identification key for the 77 genera, as well as an exhaustive inventory of species and a complete description of representative examples of wild bees within each genus (morphology, ecology, distribution). Verrières le Buisson. N.A.P. Editions. 548 pp., 70 color plates with pinned specimens, photographs from the field, habitats, 233 line drawings, hardcover 8 [13 x 20.5 cm].
