Spine is more worn with rumples and a paper label; printed black and red, readable, but edge worn on right side, extending a couple inches below the label. Rear lower corner bumped but straightened, with the rest and top and bottom edges of spine in good shape. Pages are clean with quality heavy paper bright and in very good shape, and only a small bit of foxing, mostly to the tissue covers of a few of the illustrations. Fine engravings throughout, all tissue protected; some are whole-page and some in-text, in various color tintings. Hinges and binding solid. No markings. The frontispiece is a fine color illustration of Daphnis and Chloe. This copy is number 312 of 550 limited printings for the Salon Edition. No date but printed in the late 1890's (1896 seems to be the date). About 6.5 x 10.2 in (16.6 x 26 cm).

Chaque plat est structuré par un double encadrement de filets dorés, à l'intérieur duquel se déploie un large losange central tracé à l'or, dont les sommets viennent toucher le milieu de chacun des côtés. Cette armature géométrique, d'une grande netteté de frappe, sert de support à un décor plus souple et ornemental. Note : la justification du tirage mentionne par erreur que l'ouvrage fait partie des 355 exemplaires sur Japon ne comportant qu'un seul état des illustrations. Exceptional full morocco binding lined with blue nattier leather, signed Léon Lapersonne, spine with five raised bands highlighted with gold dots, where the author, title, and date are stamped in gold, compartments decorated with intertwined foliage. Each cover is structured by a double frame of gold fillets, inside which is a large central diamond traced in gold, the corners of which touch the middle of each side. This geometric framework, with its sharp lines, serves as a support for a more flexible and ornamental decoration. Note: the justification of the print run mistakenly states that the work is one of 355 copies on Japanese paper with only one version of the illustrations. This copy actually contains two states for each illustration and is therefore part of the limited edition of 65 copies.

The OG author was a Greek writer Longus, from the Aegean island Lesbos from 2nd century AD. A bucolic life story of a boy Daphnis and a girl Chloe, abandoned by their parents, and raised by the shepherds. Since the 16th century when the text was first published the novel laid a foundation to the Renaissance pastoral novel. But one page of the manuscript was missing. It was found mysteriously in Laurenziana in 1809 by Paul Louis Courier (1772-1825). The novel was exceptionally inspirational for art and literature. The present copy was illustrated by a French Academic illustrator Raphael Collin (1850-1916), who was famous for teaching Japanese artists visiting Paris for art studies (Kuroda Seiki, Kume Keiichiro and Okada Saburosuke). The book binding is in French biedermeier style by Louis Guétant (1848-1936) who was a president of the "Chambre Syndicale de reliure de Lyon". Text in French. 1 volume complete. In 8vo. 24,6x16cm. VIII, 190pp. 12 engraved b&w plates, numerous engraved vignettes and text-ends. The contents are clean. Elegant book binding. Brown Morocco leather.
