8vo, VIII-(2)-334 pp., clothbinding. Sailer (1898-1981), an American presbyterian missionary, arrived in China in 1923, and taught psychology in Yenching University (Peking). He supported poorest students by his own means. During the Sino-Japanese War, members of anti-Japanese organizations frequently took cover in his residence. During the civil war in China, he helped those students who supported the Communist Party escape from the Nationalist Party's persecution and helped them in transporting medicine to the Liberated Area. Sailer returned to the US in 1951. In 1973 he was invited to China for an official visit and was welcomed officially by the government. Zhou En Lai commended him as a "friend of the Chinese people." After his death, Beijing University held a memorial service in his honor. Both the China Daily and Beijing Weekly ran articles in remembrance of Sailer.
