Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. The following papers are all found in one volume of the Philosophical Transactions, London, printed for J. Nichols and Lockyer Davis printer for the Royal Society for the Year 1779. Volume 69, printed 1779, 696pp, pp, 11 folding plates. Bound in a sturdy cloth that is somewhat faded around the edges (see pic). Ex-library with the usual markings: paper spine label at spine bottom, rubber stamps on text block faces, bookplate. Some occasional foxing occurs. Text is crisp. John Ingenhousz, "Improvements in Electricity read at the Royal Society June 3 1779" pp 659-673. Unusual bibliographically, as this last paper of the volume has its own half-title page (that is actually a full page, perhaps because this was also because this was the Bakerian Lecture.) John INGEN-HOUSZ (INGENHOUSZ), "Account of a new Kind of inflammable Air or Gass, which can be made in a Moment without Apparatus, and is fit for Explosion as other inflammable Gasses in use for that Purpose; together with a new Theory of Gun-Powder. Read March 25, 1779"--pp 376-418, 1 folding plate, showing apparatus. New theory of gunpowder. John INGEN-HOUSZ (INGENHOUSZ), "On some new Methods of suspending Magnetical Needles. Read June 17, 1779" pp 537-546 and 1 folded engraved plate. Charles Burney, "Account of an Infant Musician" pp 183-206. A fantastic piece by a signficant 18th-c music historian who investigates and hypothesizes on the origin of musical super-prodigees' gift of genius. He works the stories of William Crotch, Miss Frederica, the Wesleys, Bach, and then for a couple of pages, Mozart (though at the time of printing Mozart was already 23 years old, though his "infant" years are discussed). AND with: John Hunter, "Account of the Free Martin" pp 279-293 (reproductive biology, embryology, developmental endocrinology, comparative anatomy. Edward Waring, "On the General Resolution of Algebraical Equations", pp 86-104. On the theory of equations, solving algebraic equations by the Lucasian Professor of Maths at Cambridge; a significant paper in the history of algebra. Edward Waring, "Problems concerning Interpolations" pp 59-67. Concerning the mathematical determination of intermediate values from known quantities. J. A. Lexell — "Disquisitio de Tempore Periodico Cometae Anno 1770 Observati" pp 68-85, (cometary astronomy) Anders Johan Lexell investigates the orbital period of the remarkable comet of 1770, now known as Lexell's Comet. Peter Camper, "Account of the Organs of Speech of the Orang Outang." pp 139-159, Camper examines the anatomical structures associated with vocalization in an orangutan. Looking for the foundations of speech in humans—quite early. Jesse Ramsden, "The Description of Two New Micrometers" pp 419-431. Very significant paper in the history of scientific instrumentation by one of the premier instrument makes of the 18th c. George Shuckburgh — "On the Variation of the Temperature of Boiling Water" pp 362-375, significant paper in the history of temperature standards and precision measurement. Teh. Aug. MANN, "A Treatise on Rivers and Canals. Communicated by Joseph Banks. Read June 24, 1779" pp 555-656 (a very long paper for this journal). Felice FONTANA, "Experiments and Observations on the inflammable Air breathed by various Animals. Read March 11, 1779" pp 337-361. First appearance of the paper by the renowned Italian physiologist. Peter DOLLOND, "An Account of an Apparatus applied to the equatorial Instrument for correcting the Errors arising from the Refraction in Altitude. no binding. Condición: good. Captain Cooks instrument maker. First Edition. Original Printed patent disbound with printed front blue wrapper present but not the back wrapper (both often lacking in early patents) About 27cm by 18cm some wear and tear due to the disbinding.

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Two manuscripts from Jesse Ramsden's workshop, 1786 and 1788. [FIRST MANUSCRIPT] Note addressed to 'Mr Torre'. Torre must (owing to the date) be the optician Anthony Torre, whose workshop was located just to the south of Ramsden's Piccadilly workshop at Pall Mall. The note is clearly a matter of some urgency. Ramsden requests payment of 25 Guineas (equivalent to upwards of £2,000 today) and claims he will deliver his 'work' within half an hour. This raises a number of points of historical interest. For example, was Ramsden supplying parts or whole instruments for Torre to retail? This is certainly possible but as this is the first known connection between Ramsden and Torre the question has not been explored. Second, why the urgency? Was Torre really expected to pay this huge sum just to receive the work in a timely manner? The note is one a single sheet, folded in at the corners and sealed to make an impromptu self-envelope. Clearly this was hand delivered by one of Ramsden's assistants, either to Torre, waiting at his door, or to Torre's nearby workshop. An incredible glimpse into the hurly-burly of instrument making. [SECOND MANUSCRIPT] Receipt made out to Marsilio Landriani. A glimpse of Ramsden's notorious slow workmanship is given here, as the sale of the opera glasses ('Bellows with Col[oure]d Glasses') took place on 30 October 1788, and the repair was dated 27 November 1788. We know of no Ramsden opera glasses that meet this description, though the type is common enough and he may have been acting as retailer. Both documents in Ramsden's hand, bearing his name - #1 with the distinctive 'R' found on some of his instruments. Jesse Ramsden is well known as the premier instrument maker of his generation. He is famed for his astronomical and surveying instruments, and particularly the accuracy of his divided scales, for which he invented a dividing machine in the 1770s. He is one of the few instrument makers subject to full biographical treatment, in Anita McConnell's masterful 2007 work. As McConnell acknowledges, there are very few extant documents relating directly to Ramsden's life and work. There are no personal papers or business papers. Instead McConnell's biography draws on the evidence surviving in his clients' papers, and on Ramsden's own published accounts of his inventions. The only Ramsden manuscript we can locate on the market is a letter offered by Tesseract in 2008 (Catalogue 86, Nos 15, $6,500). Both manuscripts in very good condition, on good laid paper: #1 appears to be written on a fragment cut from a larger sheet, but is complete in itself; with original folds making a self-envelope 'M. Torre' and '1786 / Mr Ramsden' on the reverse. Remnants of sealing wax to one corner. #2 with some edge wear but also in excellent condition; partial watermark visible; early note about Ramsden to the rear. Signed by Author(s). …
