Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~SP44~ [4.0P] A book that explores the lesser-known aspects of the artist's work, focusing on his development of unique wooden constructions, called 'maderas.' It accompanies a groundbreaking exhibition showcasing these works and is the first North American exhibition of these specific pieces, highlighting Torres-Garcia's innovations in this medium. The book includes essays by scholars that discuss the creation of the maderas and their place in the abstract art world, particularly in Paris and Montevideo. Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) is one of the most influential artists to have emerged from Latin America in the early 20th century. His unique innovations in the medium of wood foreshadow later artistic developments in Europe and the Americas (such as the work of Louise Nevelson). Torres-Garcia was also much celebrated for his work as a modernist painter, teacher and author.

B5 : 408 pages 307 illustrations 215 in color - The world-renowned Aldopho Leirner Collection of Brazilian Constructive Art, devoted to modern Latin American art of the 1950s and 1960s, represents forerunners of abstract art in Brazil as well as key works by avant-garde artists: the Grupo Ruptura of São Paulo (including Waldemar Cordeiro and Maurício Nogueira Lima) and Rio de Janeiro's Grupo Frente (including Lygia Pape and the brothers César and Hélio Oiticica). The collection, now housed at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, also contains important works from the Neo-Concrete movement with six major pieces by Lygia Clark and major works from artists who embraced Constructive tenents by working independently, including Sergio Camargo, Mira Schendel, and Alfredo Volpi. This handsomely illustrated volume brings together thirteen essays on the Leirner Collection by preeminent international scholars and offers an important new framework for interpreting Brazilian Modernism.

"Gego (1912-1994) pioneered a new direction in art with her innovative sculptures of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Germany as Gertrud Goldschmidt, she fled the Nazi regime and moved to Caracas, Venezuela, where she absorbed modernist trends but ultimately forged her own artistic path. Exploring the concept of the line, space, and time, she linked pieces of metal to create weblike geometric forms, which she called drawings in space. These experiments culminated in Reticulárea, a massive netlike sculptural installation first presented at the Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas, in 1969. This groundbreaking work had major repercussions in the art world and marked a turning point in Gego's career. Centered on the various iterations of this work and its artistic impact, this anthology brings together images as well as documentary materials and primary texts in English and Spanish by artists, writers, and Gego" (the publisher). Corners very lightly bumped; generally a clean copy.
