The title-poem is a 21st-century remix of his celebrated anti-war poem, To Whom It May Concern (Tell me lies about Vietnam), first performed at the anti-Vietnam War protest in Trafalgar Square in 1964. Much and nothing has changed since then, and Mitchells new (now sadly final) poems are just as powerfully relevant 40 years on. Completed just before his death, the book is quintessential Adrian Mitchell with visions of war and peace, celebrations, elegies, daft adventures, and exuberant outbursts like his version of Beowulf told from the point of view of Grendel the Swamp Monster. His poetrys simplicity, clarity, passion and humour show Adrian Mitchells allegiance to a vital, popular tradition embracing William Blake as well as the ballads and the blues. His most nakedly political poems about war, Vietnam, prisons and racism became part of the folklore of the Left, sung and recited at demonstrations and mass rallies. His childlike questioning was a constant reminder from the 60s onwards that poetry is first and foremost an assertion of the human spirit. The eponymous Beauty Douglas is the name of a Black South African girl who died before she turned one month old, buried in the children's graveyard in Dimbaza, South Africa, 'where women & children who are not needed by the white economy are sent'. The foreword describes her grave, littered with rubbish among hundreds of other young children's graves, featured in the film Last Grave at Dimbaza (1974).
