After her family emigrated she shared the experiences of a pioneer community, brought to South Africa to form a barrier between African tribes and the Western Cape. In 1824 she married Donald Moodie, one of three brothers from Orkney; she bore him fourteen children, and his career took them successively to the Kowie, Graham's Town, Graaff Reinet, Cape Town and Natal. The Journal in which Sophia Pigot records her voyage to the Cape, and the first phase of the Settlement in Albany, thas not been published before. Other diaries which she kept have been discovered recently, and these, with family letters and personal memoranda, constitute a record of an eventful life, and a character study of a dynamic, humorous and courageous woman.'
