Añadir al carritoVery good. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Light dampstaining in bottom left corner not effecting printed image. Size 30.25 x 116.5 Inches. Measuring just short of ten feet, this is an impressive 1929 Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway cyanotype or blueprint map of part of Lincoln, Nebraska, including all of the modern-day City Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A Closer Look The University of Nebraska appears near the left edge of the printed image, with 'State University' and 'University Addition' marking where the university had been and illustrating how it had grown. Both Memorial Stadium and the Nebraska Coliseum are illustrated and labeled, underscoring the importance of Nebraska Athletics. Both had been built only a few years before this map was printed. Curiously, no other buildings on campus are labeled, but businesses throughout the city are identified. Below the title, a notation advises the viewer that the present edition is 'Correct to June 12, 1947'. The Railroads While this map was made by the Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway and traces its tracks through the city, four other railways are illustrated as well. These are the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad; the Chicago and North Western Railroad; the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad; and the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Notations differentiate between the railroads. The Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway Founded in 1903, the Omaha, Lincoln and Beatrice Railway was created in an attempt to create passenger rail service between the three cities. The rails never extended outside of Lincoln, however it still operates as a private company to this day as a Class III switching railroad. Cyanotype: Why so Blue? Cyanotype is a photo-reprographic technique developed in 1842 by the British astronomer John Herschel (1792 - 1871). Sometimes called a 'sunprint', the technique employs a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide , which painted on white paper or cloth, reacts when exposed to sunlight to dye the object a brilliant blue. Areas blocked from ultraviolet exposure remain undyed and white. Herschel developed the technique to reproduce his astronomical notes, but others quickly realized that any object capable of blocking light could be used to create a cyanotype image quickly and easily. By the late 19th century, the process became popular with designers, military, architects, and engineers (blueprints), who used the cheap and effective technique to quickly and exactly reproduce images in the field. Cyanotyping is limited in that only a single copy can be made at one time, so it was only practical for short-term field work. It is also of note that cyanotypes remain extremely reactive to light and, over time, fade or degrade, making them extremely ephemeral. The process fell out of fashion in most places by the 1920s but remains in use in some parts of the world, such as India and Nepal, to this day. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice Railway, on June 10, 1929, with corrections to June 12, 1947. This is the only known cataloged example of either edition of the map.

This is an 1893 Royal Geographical Society map of the Mombasa-Lake Victoria Railway in modern-day Kenya. The map details the early planning and construction stages of one of the worlds more infamous and loved heritage railroads, the famed 'Lunatic Line'. Parts of the railroad still run. Historical Context This map presents the survey work conducted by a team of five men, four of which were royal engineers, between Mombasa on the Indian Ocean and Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria. Both the projected and surveyed routes are illustrated here, with solid black lines marking projected routes and dotted lines following surveyed routes. Stations are marked along the projected lines, while the camps used by the surveyors are identified along their route. Rivers, lakes, and other topographical features are noted and numerous printed notations comment on the vegetation, terrain, and indigenous inhabitants. The Uganda Railway Construction began on the Uganda Railway, the only strategic railway constructed in tropical Africa at the time, in 1896. Built during the 'scramble for Africa', the railroad began operation in 1901, after suffering significant human losses due to disease, tribal resistance, and hostile wildlife, including the infamous man-eating Tsavo lions. All these factors, plus the exorbitant cost, earned the railroad the nickname Lunatic Line . Other than the obvious commercial impact, the Uganda Railroad also became an inseparable part of safari expeditions around the turn of the 20th century. Even former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt rode on the train, reportedly spending most of his time riding on the platform attached to the front of the locomotive. 'Scramble for Africa' The 'scramble for Africa' officially began with the 1884-85 Berlin Conference. The Berlin Conference was a meeting of colonial powers in Berlin during the New Imperialism Period. The resultant 'General Act of the Berlin Conference' is considered to be the formalization of the 'Scramble for Africa', wherein much of Africa was partitioned between major European powers (with little regard to the claims and priorities of the indigenous peoples). To claim territory, the delegates needed to prove 'effective occupation.' This means they needed to establish the existence of treaties with local powers, show that their flags were being flown (hence the identification of various flags on this map), or have active forts in the region. The conference marked a major change in the European approach to Africa. Initially European powers treated African peoples much like Native Americans, establishing trading relationships and alliances with indigenous kingdoms. After the Berlin Conference, heightened colonial activity and the need to prove effective occupation lead to the subjugation of most indigenous control. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the Royal Geographical Society for publication in the August 1893 edition of The Geographical Journal from a map issued by the Intelligence Division of the War Office. Two examples are catalogued in the OCLC as being part of the collections at the University of Chicago and the University of Oxford. References: OCLC 53894348.

An utterly charming 1896 lithograph pictorial map issued to promote travel to the Pacific Northwest via the Northern Pacific Railway. This map was issued in 1896 by Charles S. Fee, general passenger agent for the Northern Pacific Railway. It covers the western part of the United States roughly from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. Superimposed upon the map is the image of an English Pointer dog in classic 'pointer' pose. The dog's head, spine, and tail illustrate the course of the Northern Pacific Railway from Duluth, Minnesota to Olympia, Washington. Promotional copy overlaying the map reads, Mark! When you want a Pointer regarding your western trip call on your nearest ticket agent or district passenger agent on the Northern Pacific Railway Co. or address Chas. S. Publication History and Census This map was engraved and printed for the Northern Pacific by Poole Brothers of Chicago. It is quite rare, with only a single 'digital' example listed at the OCLC and one at the Washington State Historical Society. This map was printed in several different formats. We have encountered it printed on stationary and, as here, in the form of a print magazine advertisement. References: OCLC 611611768. Washington State Historical Society, EPH 385.061/ N814m 1896.

The Tasmanian Main Line Company (T.M.L.) was a privately owned railway company which operated in Tasmania from 1872 to 1890. The company provided the first rail services between Hobart and Launceston, where it connected with the Launceston and Western Railway. On 1 October 1890, the Tasmanian Government bought the Tasmanian Main Line Company. The railway played an important role in the economic development of the island state. The map is highly detailed topographically. Settlements, towns and counties are named and geographical features such as the mountainous region of the Central Highlands area, which covers most of the central western parts of the state are shown in detail. This is a 1922 Poole Brothers railroad map of Florida highlighting the Southern Railway System . The map highlights the Southern Railway and other connected railroads, promoting railway access to Florida. A Closer Look Depicting from southern Georgia to Key West and from Apalachicola east to the Atlantic. Bold lines highlight the Southern Railway System . Stops are labeled. Thinner lines illustrate the rest of Florida's railway network, including the Seaboard Air Line , the Atlantic Coast Line , and the Florida East Coast Railway . Cities and towns throughout are labeled. Canals connecting Lake Okeechobee with the Atlantic are illustrated. An inset map along the left border depicts from Cincinnati south to Sarasota and highlights Southern Railway routes to Florida. Other major railroad lines are shown as well, illustrating connections to the Southern Railway . An inset in the bottom right depicts Cuba, along with its railway network and the many steamship routes between that island and points around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Southern Railway System The Southern Railway System (1894 - 1982) was born in 1894 when financier J. P. Morgan consolidated the Richmond and Danville Railroad , Memphis and Charleston Railroad , East Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia Railroad, the Alabama Great Southern Railroad , and Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad . At that point, the Southern Railway operated over 4,400 miles of track and owned two-thirds of that trackage. The Southern Railway continued to expand through the first two decades of the 20th century, eventually becoming an 8,000-mile, 13-state system that lasted for nearly 50 years. The Southern Railway resisted the railroad merger trend in the 1960s and remained an independent regional carrier. However, competition and the creation of the CSX Corporation in November 1980, forced the Southern Railway to merge with the Norfolk and Western Railway to form the Norfolk Southern Railway , which began operating in 1982 and still operates today. Publication History and Census This map was created and copyrighted by Poole Brothers and published by the Southern Railway System in 1922. Editions of this map were published annually from 1920 until 1925 (that we know of), although the central map of Florida bears the 1915 copyright on all editions. For some unknown reason, the 1920 edition includes an updated date to 1920 on the central map, which is the only one to do so. Poole Brothers also published a 1915 railroad map of Florida that depicted the entire state, including the western panhandle, which we have previously sold (see Geographicus floridarailroads-poolebros-1915). We note an example of the present edition at the Touchton Map Library. References: Touchton Map Library L2019.059.021.

This is a 1924 Fei-Shi route map of the Beijing-Baotou railway, also known as the Peking-Kalgan-Suiyan Railway from Peking to Pao-To-Chen. The map depicts the region from Beijing (Peking) to Baotou (Paotow Chen). Highly detailed, numerous locations along the rail line are labeled, including the main stops at Zhangjiakou (Kalgan) and the terminus at Baotou (Paotow). Both the Outer and Inner Great Wall of China snake their way across the map from Beijing, stopping at the Yellow River, which forms part of the border with Inner Mongolia. Several roads and other railways are illustrated, along with canals, rivers, and lakes. The Beijing Baotou Railway, as it is referred to today, stretches over 500 miles from Beijing to Baotou. The Imperial Peking Kalgan Railway was the first section of this railway and was constructed between 1905 and 1909, connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou. This was the first railway designed and built by Chinese. The railway was extended from Zhangjiakou beginning in 1921 and reached Baotou by 1923. Today, this line has been mostly abandoned in favor of another, the Fengsha railway, which was built in the 1950s. This map was produced for Fei-Shi's Guide to Peking and its Environs and published in 1924.

Añadir al carritoGood. Reinforced where previously attached to binder. Verso repairs to fold separations and at fold intersections. Size 26 x 14.75 Inches. This is a c. 1917 map of the Bay State Street Railway system in New England. The map marks the final days of interurban street railways in New England. A Closer Look This colorful map covers from southern New Hampshire in the north to Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard in the south. The lines of the Bay State Street Railway are traced in thick red lines, with the railway's power stations and car houses noted with red dots. Other electric lines, steam railroads, steamship lines, administrative boundaries, and parks are recorded as indicated in the legend below the title. Additional features, such as cities and towns, waterways, lighthouses, mountains, and islands, are also identified. Concentric circles are drawn at ten-mile intervals from downtown Boston. The map is surrounded by a grid corresponding to an index at the bottom, listing principal points on the railway's route. Bay State Street Railway The Bay State Street Railway was formed in 1911 by the merger of the Boston and Northern Street Railway, which, as its name implies, operated out of Boston to destinations to the north, and the Old Colony Street Railway, which connected the city with points south. Both the Boston and Northern and the Old Colony had themselves already gone through multiple mergers and consolidations, leaving the Bay State Street Railway with the extensive network seen here, one of the largest such networks in the country, operating as far north as Nashua, New Hampshire and Newburyport, Massachusetts, and as far south as New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Providence and Newport, Rhode Island. The Bay State ran both urban/suburban local service and longer-distance interurban service on electrified lines. Like its predecessors, it faced financial difficulties on several fronts, went into receivership in late 1917, and was reborn as a key part of the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway, which survived until 1968 (by operating bus routes instead of streetcars) until being absorbed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Interurban Streetcars At the end of the 19th century, New England was serviced by an extensive network of interurban electric and steam-powered streetcars, the earliest of which often replaced horsecar lines. These were not proper railroads, but rather a separate system of electrified interurban streetcars (akin to the Pacific Electric System in Southern California), run by various competing companies, that extended from New York to Boston and throughout New England as far north as Bath and Lewiston, Maine. As mentioned above, these companies were consolidated in rapid succession in the early 20th century, with just a few left standing by 1920. The rise of the automobile, including buses operated by the streetcar companies, ushered in the end of interurban streetcar travel by 1940. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by the Passenger Department of the Bay State Street Railway. It is undated, but as the company only existed between 1911 and 1917, it must date to that period. The map is quite rare; the Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library holds an uncolored example, while the Connecticut State Library, University of Chicago (misdated c. 1939), and the non-profit organization Historic New England also note examples (either the present map or the uncolored variant) among their collections. Mexican Southern Railway The Mexican Southern Railway (Ferrocarril Mexicano del Sur), later known as the Mexican Southern Railroad, was a railway company that operated in Mexico during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was established to connect Mexico City with Oaxaca, linking much of Mexico's central and southern regions in the process and facilitating transportation and economic development in previously inaccessible areas. The railway was originally conceived by Ulysses S. Grant, who had an interest in Mexico since his service in the Mexican-American War, and Matías Romero, a native Oaxacan who served as Mexico's ambassador to the U.S. for much of the 1860s when Mexico was invaded and partially occupied by French forces. After nearly being nominated for a third time at the 1880 Republican National Convention and instead leaving politics, Grant was approached with various business opportunities. Romero had secured a concession from the government of Oaxaca to build a railroad towards Mexico City (and eventually in the other direction to Guatemala) and asked Grant to be president of the new company. They were able to secure financiers, and the company was incorporated in the state of New York in early 1881. Given Grant's stature, the project received significant attention in the U.S. However, the logistical difficulties of surveying, let alone building, through densely forested valleys and mountains, led to slow progress. By 1884, investors began to flee, and the company went bankrupt; the following year, Grant died, and the project temporarily died with him. The concession was passed around to different entrepreneurs until the British company Read and Campell acquired it in 1888 and began construction on a more limited line between Puebla and Oaxaca, completed in 1892. The company was financially successful and helped to link Oaxaca to the national and international economy, as had been hoped for in the original conception by Romero and Grant. In 1909, the Ferrocarril Interoceánico de México obtained a lease on the Mexican Southern, and both lines were nationalized in 1936. Today, the line's former station in Oaxaca City is a museum dedicated to the railway (Museo del Ferrocarril Mexicano del Sur). Railways and the Porfiriato The U.S.-aligned government of Porfirio Díaz (1830 - 1915, himself a native Oaxacan), who led Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was enthusiastic about infrastructure projects such as telegraph lines and railways. Though correct in assuming these would boost economic growth, the government was at best indifferent to how much these policies would help ordinary people, especially laborers in the mines and agricultural plantations who powered the increased productivity. The highly uneven distribution of wealth and reliance on exploitative labor practices caused social tension to build up throughout Mexico, resulting in a revolution in 1910 followed by a decade-long civil war. Publication History and Census This map is undated, but from context (existing and projected rail lines), it most likely dates to.

It captures the breakneck growth of Milwaukee's public transportation system in the first decades of the 20th century. A Closer Look Coverage embraces Milwaukee from Mill Road south to the Milwaukee County Airport and from the New Blue Mound Country Club to Lake Michigan. Red overprinting highlights the city's streetcar, bus, and interurban rail lines. Each line is numerically identified to correspond with a key in the lower left. Streets are illustrated throughout, along with canals, parks, golf courses, and cemeteries. The Public Service Building, the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company's corporate headquarters, are marked by a large red dot and arrow. This building opened in 1905 and served as the Milwaukee Railway and Light Company's interurban terminal. Ten lines operated inside the building and another three boarded outside. Not far away, the rail lines of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad are also identified. The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company (1896 - 1938) (TM) was an electric street railway and electricity provider in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the surrounding region. Founded in January 1896, TM emerged from the bankruptcy of the Milwaukee Street Railway, which began operation in 1890, and had consolidated most of Milwaukee's horse-drawn streetcars. Milwaukee's streetcar and interurban railroad network grew exponentially in the early part of the 20th century, eventually operating 180 miles of track within the city limits alone. By the time of this map's publication, TM operated 19 streetcar lines and 15 bus lines in Milwaukee and interurban rail lines to Racine, Kenosha, Burlington, East Troy, Waukesha, Watertown, Port Washington, and Sheboygan. Ridership had fallen off by the early 1930s due to the popularity of private cars and continued to fall throughout the Great Depression. Ridership slightly rebounded during World War II (1939 - 1945) due to gasoline and tire rationing. Defense workers commuting to work also helped increase ridership. However, after the war, ridership decreased rapidly, and all of Milwaukee's streetcar lines were abandoned by 1958. The map depicts two train and one steamship route, allowing the tourist to experience the 'charm and grandeur' of the wilderness of British Columbia by traveling by rail from Vancouver to Jasper and from Jasper to Prince Rupert and then via steamship from Prince Rupert along the Canadian coastline south to Vancouver. Persuasive Cartography? Although at first glance this map appears to be very similar to all other rail maps of the area, the Canadian National Railway is subtlety using this map as a means to 'forget' its competition. Here, the mapmaker employs two different scales and does not delineate exactly where the two meet. In doing so, this map becomes part of a long history of railroad companies using clever cartography to 'emphasize' their own route while strategically leaving out competing lines. In this case, the mapmaker has left out southeastern British Columbia and adjacent Alberta, making it possible for the routes operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway (its major competitor) to be left out, along with its hotel at Lake Louise. By putting forth the suggestion that the Canadian National Railway was the only option for travelers to visit this part of British Columbia, and that its hotel - the Jasper Park Lodge - provided the only accommodations in the area, the Canadian National Railway promoted its own services while 'artistically leaving out' those of its main competitor. A Closer Look at the Map With this in mind, it is easy to see why locations all along the route are labeled, but the most detail is provided in Jasper National Park near the map's right border. Enticing details of what awaits the tourist are noted, including the Jasper Park Lodge, which features 'all the refinements and comforts the modern tourist demands', along with numerous mountains, lakes, and other lodges. Five photos also adorn the map, allowing the viewer to see the Jasper Park Lodge, Mount Robson in Mount Robson Park, the Fraser Canyon, totem poles in Kitwanga, and a sample of the scenery they will experience on the voyage by steamship from Prince Rupert to Vancouver. Verso Content A map of the North Pacific coast from Portland, Oregon to Cape Ocean, Alaska is printed on the verso. Highlighting the Canadian National Railway lines and Canadian National Steamship routes, stops along all the routes are noted and labeled. Railroads emanating from Seattle and Tacoma in Washington are also noted. An inset map of western Canada from the Pacific Ocean to Edmonton features the entire Canadian National Railway network in the British Columbia and Alberta.
