Dr Wortle's School is one of the least known and least read of Anthony Trollope's novels. At first sight, that is understandable. There is little dramatic tension in the plot and the particular dilemma that Trollope explores - how society should react to a man and woman who are found to be 'living in sin' - appears to have been left high and dry by the receding tide of moral disapproval in matters of private behaviour. For a man and woman to live togather without the blessing of the church may no longer be a cause for scandal but the underlying theme of this book is more profound and less subject to fashion. It is the conflict between the black and white morality that society prefers and the moral ambialence the individual may feel when he knows all the circumstances of a particular case.
