Chageinu (meaning Our Holidays) is a sumptuous picture book drawn by Ze'ev Raban of the Bezalel Art School, Jerusalem. The work includes 14 plates f…eaturing beautiful color illustrations by the famed artist, relating to the spectrum of Jewish holiday practices throughout the year. The holiday depicted include the Sabbath (Shabbat), the High Holidays, Sukkot, Simcha Torah, Hanukkah, Tu bi'shvat, Purim, Passover, Lag Ba'Omer, Shavuot, and Tisha Be'av. Each illustration features an accompanying poem by Levin Kipnis, the Israeli children's author and poet. Each poem surrounded by gilt stamped designs and ruling. Each color plate is protect by tissue guards. Text in Hebrew. Binding with some light rubbing to extremities. Minor sunning to the spine and right side of the front cover. A few small smudges to the covers. Interior with light smudges to the rear endpapers. All images and text pages clean and vibrant. Binding in very good, interior in near fine condition overall. Raban is regarded as a leading member of the Bezalel school art style, in which artists portrayed both Biblical and Zionist themes in a style influenced by the European Jugendstil (similar to Art Nouveau) and by traditional Persian and Syrian styles. *In the book Kipnis is credited as Avi-Shai.

The Bezalel school was founded in 1906 in Jerusalem by the artist and professor Boris Schatz and was the first art school to be established in the Holy Land in the 20th century. The establishment of Bezalel was initiated by Schatz, who discussed his vision of opening an art school in the Land of Israel with Herzl, while the two met in Vienna in 1903 at the sixth Zionist Congress. Schatz chose to call the school 'Bezalel' after the biblical artist Bezalel ben Uri ben Hur, mentioned in the book of Exodus as the artist chosen by God to build the Tabernacle (hamishkan in Hebrew). According to the scripture this artist worked in silver, gold, copper, stone and wood. By founding his art school Schatz aimed to establish a national style of art, blending classical Jewish, European and Middle-Eastern traditions. In addition to traditional sculpture and painting training, the school ran craft workshops that produced decorative art objects in silver, leather, wood, brass and fabric, which were sold at exhibitions in Europe and the United States. Schatz's school was closed in 1929 and then reopened in the mid 1930s as the 'New Bezalel'. In 1955 the school received its official academic acclaim and today the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design is Israel's national school of art, as well as its oldest higher education institution. The art created by Bezalel's students and professors in the first decades of the 20th century is considered the stepping stone for Israeli visual arts and many of the famous Israeli artist's and illustrators studied and worked in or with the school over the years, including Ze'ev Raban (1890-1970) who arrived to Jerusalem 1912 and immediately joined the Bezalel Academy and taught there until its temporary closure in 1929. Raban was a prolific and influential artist, who illustrated several Biblical books and the Passover Haggadah.

This is a bilingual edition of Hebrew and English so after each Song illustration by Raban there is a tissue guard with Hebrew letters presumably giving the number of the verse, etc.…, and opposite each Raban plate (which as this is a jewish book are bound to the rectos if you read the book from back to front as is required{ There is an English trnslation but these are much more simple being done in black ink although with a bit of color ar=t the top of each son. on the English plate the chapter and verse are written in by hand in different colors. Publisher's gray cloth with a Jewish device in blue on the covers and simulated sewing around the edges, lovely multicolor floral endpapers (with some restoration at the corners), sympathetically rebacked to style. A very clean copy with bright and lovely plates.; no tears or marks and in the original, albeit somewhat restored binding.Ze?ev Raban (1890-1970), born Wolf Rawicki (Ravitzki), was a leading painter, decorative artist, and industrial designer of the Bezalel school style, and was one of the founders of the Israeli art worldWolf Rawicki (later Ze'ev Raban) was born in ód , Congress Poland, and began his studies there. He continued his studies in sculpture and architectural ornamentation at a number of European art academies. These included, in 1905, the School of Applied Art in Munich at the height of the Jugendstil movement; in 1907, the neo-classical studio of Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, then a center of Art Nouveau, under symbolist and idealist artists Victor Rousseau and Constant Montald; and in 1912 he left Europe, joining the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem. Raban is regarded as a leading member of the Bezalel school art style, in which artists portrayed both Biblical and Zionist themes in a style influenced by the European Jugendstil (similar to Art Nouveau) and by traditional Persian and Syrian styles. Like other European art nouveau artists of the period, such as Alphonse Mucha, Raban combined commercial commissions with un-commissioned paintings. He was a multi-talented artist although mainly in the making of Jewish symbols and religious pieces.
