The author was associated with the Medical Research Council's Radiobiological Research Unit, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell. The Atomic Energy Research Establishment, known as AERE or colloquially Harwell Laboratory, near Harwell, Oxfordshire, was the main centre for atomic energy research and development in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1990s. Based on this research, it was suggested that regular blood counts were of no value to those occupationally exposed to radiation provided there is regular physical measurement of the doses received. Changes in the peripheral blood by themselves and without further evidence should not be assumed to mirror damage to bone marrow. Damage to the gonads seemed to be a more sensitive index of exposure to radiation. The Journal of Clinical Pathology is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering all aspects of pathology, published by the BMJ Group and co-owned by the Association of Clinical Pathologists.
