He then describes the Frenchman de Lesseps himself, and the political obstructions, financial problems and engineering hazards successfully overcome by this remarkable Frenchman. Although the canal was meant to be neutral territory that any nation could use in commerce or war, it suffered many setbacks, particularly the Suez Crisis of 1956.
