Signed and inscribed by the authors Ray Hoadley and Roman Freulich in the year of publicationto actress, singer Deanna Durbin who is mentioned within the text and whose photograph appears twice. Inscribed: ÒFor Deanna whose presence here enriches the book. Sincerely, Ray Hoadely, Roman Freulich. Los Angeles, Cal.,… Nov Ô39Ó. Illustrated throughout with black & white photos by Roman Freulich, 119 pages. Very good copy with some minor aging to the pages as usual and with some faint darkening to the cloth at the spine and edges in a very good dust jacket with a hint of edge wear and a few small tears. From the front jacket flap: ÒThe story in a motion picture is a fascinating one, and here it is all told from the buying of the story to its appearance on the screen. Mr. Hoadley of Universal Pictures has written a text that would interest anybody and the photographs by Roman Freulich (also of Universal Pictures) tell their story in a way that only fine photography can.Ó And from the rear jacket flap: ÒRoman Freulich, the photographer, is now with Universal Studios, where he began his screen career, attached to the unit which surrounds Deanna Durbin, the talented young singing star.Ó Deanna Durbin (1921 - 2013) was a lyric soprano who appeared in musical films in the 1930s and 1940s. Her first appearance as a child actress was with Judy Garlan in Every Sunday (1936). Her early work at Universal was credited with saving the studio from bankruptcy. After mixed success as a more dramatic actress, she retired from performing in 1949, settled with her husband, producer-director Charles Henri David in a farmhouse near Paris, and withdrew from public life.
