About the book >.>.> The Shchukin Family The Shchukins, one of the richest families in the ancient Russian city of Borovsk, fled to Vologda during its occupation by the French in 1812 and then scattered throughout Russia. Vasily Petrovich Shchukin, grandfather of Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin, did not want to return to the ruined city and settled in Moscow. From the Old Believers, he converted to Orthodoxy, was engaged in the textile trade, and in 1836 he died at the age of about 80, bequeathing his business to his six sons. Ivan Vasilyevich Shchukin (1818-1890), having accumulated his capital, left his father's business and became an intermediary between manufacturers and retailers. His career developed quickly - he had an innate entrepreneurial talent. In 1849, he married Ekaterina Petrovna Botkina (1824-1904), the daughter of the famous Pyotr Kononovich Botkin, the founder of the largest tea trading company in Russia.
