Añadir al carritoRare program and playbill for a 1949 revival of Mae West's first major hit Diamond Lil, staged at Central City, Colorado's historic Central City Opera House as part of the Fourteenth Annual Central City Play Festival with an appearance by Ray Bourbon, one of America's leading female impersonators. Written by and starring Mae West, Diamond Lil centers on the life of a femme fatale of the Bowery in the 1890s. The show toured nationally in 1949 and opened to a packed house at the Central City Opera House on July 30. With West reviving her role as the titular Diamond Lil, the small Denver suburb was starstruck by the arrival of the biggest celebrity the former mining town had ever seen. This excitement could be seen at the box office; nearly all the initial twenty-five performances were sold out before opening night, leading organizers to extend the play's run for another week. Stapled to the program is a playbill featuring cast and crew credits for the show's run in Central City, which includes a tipped in hotel bill for a Mr. and Mrs. H. Crabtree for for a two-night stay on August 9 and 10. A handwritten note on the program's front cover denotes that the couple stayed at the Teller Hotelbetter known as Teller House, a famous hotel built in 1872 at the height of the Colorado gold rushand attended Diamond Lil on August 9. Offset in wraps with holograph in blue ink on front cover. Saddle-stapled. [16 pp]. 9 x 12 in. Front and back cover detached from spine, toning commensurate with age, minor wear to cover; else very good.
