This novel is a satirical fictional history of Penguinia (i.e., France) with oblique references to the Dreyfus Affair among others. Satirizing the European colonization of the Americas and the subsequent Valladolid Debate of 1550-1551, a blind monk is driven by Satan off course and lands on an island occupied by penguins, and, as he perceives them to be small people, he starts baptizing them, leading to a conference in heaven as to whether the penguins now were humans with immortal souls. Introduction by Professor H. R. Steeves. Originally published in French as (1908), and first published by the Modern Library in 1933. Translator not stated.
