The Text Block is clean, soft white, tight, straight and square with no markings other than a small marginal stain (inside upper left) on page 95 and a prior owner's name on the front free endpaper and reverse of the half-title page. The Binding is Toledano Binding Style 8 in green cloth, color uniform throughout, with Rockwell Kent torchbearer image within gilt outline enclosed square label in black with gilt lettering to the front board, gilt title, etc., to the spine in a black rectangle with the Kent torchbearer above, Rockwell Kent endpapers unmarked except as described above, and all corners square and sharp. The Bro-Dart protected Dust Jacket is fully intact with the original price clipped from the front flap, with colors bright and uniform throughout. This novel is a satirical fictional history of Penguinia (i.e., France) with oblique references to the Dreyfus Affair among others. Satirizing the European colonization of the Americas and the subsequent Valladolid Debate of 1550-1551, a blind monk is driven by Satan off course and lands on an island occupied by penguins, and, as he perceives them to be small people, he starts baptizing them, leading to a conference in heaven as to whether the penguins now were humans with immortal souls. Introduction by Professor H. R. Steeves. Originally published in French as (1908), and first published by the Modern Library in 1933. Translator not stated.
