Marcus Valerius Probus, active in Rome during the reign of Nero, was a learned commentator and reviewer of older Latin texts. This Danish edition of his work on Roman abbreviations is supplied with commentaries by Henrik Ernst on pp. 109-62. The Strassburg-born Johannes Schefferus (1621-79) was called into Sweden by Queen Christina as professor in Uppsala and eventually became university librarian and a member of the Council of Antiquities in Stockholm. He made great contributions as a publisher of antique and other older texts, but also wrote important works of his own, for example "Lapponia" (1673). Schefferus' library building is still preserved in Uppsala.
