Francesco Priuli (1570-1610) è uno di quei patrizi che l'élite veneziana offriva alla diplomazia della Serenissima; fu in Spagna, in Savoia (1601-1603), a Praga presso Rodolfo II. La diplomazia nella Venezia del '600. Una legge del 1425 imponeva agli ambasciatori rientrati in Venezia dalla loro missione di dar-ne entro pochi giorni informazione alle istituzioni della Serenissima. Secondo una pratica che di-venne consuetudinaria, la scrittura degli amba-sciatori da pura e semplice esposizione dell'attività del referente si estese sino a divenire un ampio affresco della condizione di uno Stato, periodicamente aggiornato nella situazione economica, politica, sociale e militare. Dopo la lettura pubblica in Senato il testo della relazione era depositato nella Cancelleria Segreta del Se-nato e ne veniva vietata la diffusione. Divieto peraltro frequentemente aggirato da uomini politici, nobili (come i Chigi e i Barberini), potenti, Principi della Chiesa e persino eruditi.
