Elle dira, peuestre, par la faite de ma lettre, qu'elle est interessée puis que je vais luy recommander un tres mauvais proces, et de tres peu de consequence, que j'ay, contre le mr. de Harttrimborn [?] amoureux de la fillie de stall, a qui cette belle passion a fait resigner une couple de prebendes. Mon procureur [.] vous expliquera la chose mieux que moy, tres mauvais juriste, il m'assure depuis lontemps, que la chose est entièrement, instruite, et que le referend n'attend que vos ordres pour faire sa relation [.]." - Arenberg trat jung in den französischen Militärdienst ein, übernahm von seinem Großvater das Infanterieregiment La Marck und diente im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg mehrere Jahre lang auf außereuropäischen Kriegsschauplätzen, so etwa in Indien. Während der Französischen Revolution war er Mitglied der Verfassunggebenden Nationalversammlung sowie der gemäßigten Hofpartei und hoffte, die Monarchie noch retten zu können. Im Jahr 1791 floh er nach Österreich und war als Unterhändler für französische Behörden tätig.
