Añadir al carritoLondon: Printed for W. Hone, 1816. 16 pp. Charles Phillips' "Rich Masterpiece of Eloquence" A Scarce 1816 Adultery Trial Sensation Phillips, Charles. The Most Eloquent Speech, At Length, Of Mr. Phillips, In the Court of Common Pleas, Dublin, In the Case of Guthrie v. Sterne, For Adultery. With the Author's Last Corrections: Not a Single Word Omitted. London: Printed for W. Hone, 1816. Thirteenth stated edition. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). 16 pp. Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in modern cloth, lettering piece and gilt date to spine. Boards lightly bowed, light rubbing to extremities. Bookplate (of Geoffrey G. Briggs) and small bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Light toning to interior, crack in text block after title page, light soiling in a few places, faint dampstain to top of first five leaves. A very good copy. $450. * The trial of Guthrie v. Sterne was one of the early 19th century's most sensational actions for "criminal conversation" (crim. con.), a common-law tort that allowed a husband to sue another man for damages resulting from adultery. Utilizing a masterful blend of Romantic sensibility and high-stakes theatrical rhetoric, preeminent Anglo-Irish barrister Charles Phillips [1787-1859] painted a devastating portrait of broken domestic bliss. His speech captivated the jury and successfully secured a staggering ?5,000 judgment for his client, John Guthrie. This edition is historically noteworthy for its radical publisher, William Hone, who regularly weaponized high-society sex scandals to critique upper-class morality and profit from the public's appetite for legal melodrama. This copy belonged to the distinguished legal library of Sir Geoffrey Briggs [1914-1993], the eminent English jurist who served as Chief Justice of Hong Kong and Brunei. OCLC locates 6 copies of all editions in North American law libraries (University of Pennsylvania, Yale, U.S. Supreme Court, University of Minnesota, LA County, University of Missouri). Not in the British Museum Catalogue. London: Printed for W. Hone, 1816. 16 pp. (ilustrador).…
