Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near fine. First edition. First edition, Fine/Near fine copy of this distinctive and uncommon approach to mathematics education. We have listed a fair few books about advanced mathematics, particularly regarding the history of geometry and mathematical instruction. Describi…ng these books with clarity and intelligence has given us - as non-mathematicians - pause, shall we say. Now comes along "Geometrical Investigations: Illustrating the Art of Discovery in the Mathematical Field," by John Pottage. One critic in the journal "Educational Studies in Mathematics" said, "The author's concern is to present mathematics as a truly liberal art and to humanize mathematics education." What the reviews and dust jacket convey is a rather delightful way to teach math, particularly forms of higher mathematics, to non-mathematicians. Pottage does this by reviving three characters created originally by Galileo named Salviati, Sagredo and Simplicio and have the reader follow them as they work their way towards proving two separate geometrical theorems. They do this in fourteen supposed one-hour dialogues, with Salviati taking the part of the teacher, Sagredo the eager and more intelligent student, and Simplicio.well, he's eager, let's grant him that. What's fascinating about this presentation is that we watch them fail. More than that, we watch them fail more than once and, as we learn more ourselves, we can predict where their failures will end up before they finally succeed! These dialogues take up the first half of the book. The second half is full of notes that trace the historical background for the arguments made in the dialogues. It turns out that everything we've read-every failure and every success-can be documented in the history of mathematics, but placing that documentation within the dialogues themselves would interrupt the flow and, as the previous critic put it, "The journey is more important than the destination, as we follow the argument we have the excitement of a well-told tale." The second half also includes about fifty problems and solutions, mostly Euclidean proofs. Overall, the idea is to help teachers bring what Pottage himself calls in his subtitle "the art of discovery" to the classroom. The instructors who reviewed the book, including the critic for the "The Mathematical Gazette" who started his review with, "This is unquestionably the most difficult book to review that I have ever received," certainly think he succeeded. It's enough to make those of us who successfully skirted higher mathematics thus far still want to pick it up and read it. Fine in a near-fine dust jacket. Attractive dark red grained imitation morocco binding. Very minor rubbing at the base of the spine; otherwise exceptionally well-preserved. Dust jacket shows light wear at head and foot of the spine and minor age toning along the edges. Faint surface indentations to the front panel visible under angled light, but no tears or significant defects. An unusually well-preserved copy of this distinctive and uncommon approach to mathematics education. Photos are forthcoming or available immediately upon request.
