Octavo 8 1/2 X 11" black cloth bound photo scrapbook. Leaves are made of heavy paper with slots for inserting postcards. A collection of 72 original photo postcards dating from approximately 1899 to the early WWII era. Many of the photo postcards have cancelled postage, addresses and correspondence written on the back (some on the front). Some postcards are homemade (verified by the inscriptions as such), and some postcards in the collection were made by professional photographers such as the BYRON HARMON Real Photo postcards of scenery in Canada. Many photos are dated, but not all. At least one photo postcard, sent from Acapulco Mexico, contains the purple U.S. censorship stamp with the initials of the examiner which suggest that it could have been sent in war time. The photos are randomly arranged and do not seem to be related to one person or family; the collection contains a variety of photographic and processing techniques (including two cyanotypes). Many of the postcards are portraiture and family groups, but the collection includes many scenic location shots such as: aerial view of Hingham, England: Georgian houses on the Hingham Green; Mule Canyon Utah; "Crazy Woman Meadow" in the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming; Lake Michigan; the Mojave Desert; Mt. Rainier; High Falls, Pigeon River, Ontario and the Acapulco cliffs.…

With 82 colour-printed, black & white printed photo, chromolithograph & 1 suede-leather postcards. Padded faux alligator skin black cloth, rounded corners, gilt lettering stamped on front cover (slight shelfwear, occasional minor rubbing & creasing to a couple of the postcards), still a NF exemplar. A marvelous postcard souvenir album filled with postcards assembled by a young Port Angeles teenager, chronicling the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The postcards encompass the views from the gardens to Mt. Rainier, the Alaska Monument 7 Hawaii Building, Arctic Brotherhood Building, Canadian Government Building, the Emergency Hospital Building, Machinery Hall, Manufactures Building, Forestry Building, many of the States Buildings, and courts. In addition, there are views of the Japanese Building, the "Tokio Cafe" leading to the Japanese Village, Nanaimo Building, and a number of nighttime shots of the Exposition. Four of the postcards depict the Siberian and Alaskan Indigenous peoples on display at the Exposition, with images of baby's in furs, and Indigenous Peoples standing in front of A-Y-P pavilions. The printed photo postcard of the Daughters of the American Revolution Building at the A-Y-P includes note on verso addressed to Juanita Shelpman (1896-1974), at the time a daughter of a Port Angeles barber, and later a music teacher in Vancouver, WA, later married to the rather flighty orchestra leader Lewis Kincheloe (1892-1978).…

Six volumes. 4to. 32; 38; 38; 27; 37; 34 leaves; an additional 16 leaves in manuscript in 3 of the albums written by Harriet Dana at age 10. Approx. 300 real photos of Harriet & George, Ruth Dana, Samuel Dana, many street scenes (numerous large studio photos tipped-in of sights in Rome, Florence, Dresden, and other areas). Over 450 black & white tipped-in photo postcards, many of them real photo postcards, a few gold-tone photo postcards; approx. 75 tipped-in colour postcards; two letters of introduction from Yale University Secretary Robert Maynard Hutchins, letter of introduction from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, William Marion Jardine, who served under Presidents Coolidge and Hoover; printed invitations to the Congress, World Forestry Congress credentials, numerous programs to operas and theaters in European cities; menus to the S.S. President Harding; Menus for the S/Y Meteor; menus for the conferences; Children's Tea Menu for the S.S. President Harding; Passenger lists for the United States Lines President Harding; tourist maps, pictorial maps, manuscript annotations, and more. Uniformly bound in pebbled black cloth two-ring binders, 1 of them with SS President Harding ribbon stretched around the binding (wear & rubbing to the corners, bumping to the spines, a couple of the binders with hinges starting, many of the leaves with wear, and some loose at the gutter margin), still a remarkable archive. An incredible Jazz Age archive of travel photos, ephemera, and documents assembled by Samuel T. Dana and his daughter Harriet during the family's five month trip through Europe for the First World Forestry Congress held in Rome, Italy. The albums are filled with documentation and souvenirs from their grand tour through Europe. Included are photos of the participants in the World Forestry conference, two of them are of Dana's subcommittee at the meeting, many of the registration credentials, letters of introduction, as well as invitations to meetings and parties associated with the conference. The Dana family had an audience with the Pope in Rome, saw Benito Mussolini, visited the major sights of Venice with pictures of young George Dana feeding the pigeons in the Plaza in front of St. Mark's Cathedral. They attended Verdi's opera, La Traviata featuring the soprano Violetta Valery. From there they traveled through France, Switzerland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. They have included their brochures for visiting assorted museums, folk festivals, operas in Munich, historical sights in Prague, the beautiful city of Dresden, tramped through all parts of Paris, voyaged on the S/Y Meteor of the Norwegian Steamship Lines through Sweden, Finland, and Norway with the special treat of including their menus for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and children's teas (great photo of the children for the Captain's tea on the SS President Harding). The photographs feature street scenes in assorted places, views from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower, many of the people they met in their travels and more. Dana met with foresters, and visited timber stands throughout northern Europe and Scandinavia.Of particular interest are the many leaves hand-written by the 10-year old Harriet Dana (1916-2011) describing the places they visited, her impressions of the sights, the many experiences she had, as well as very charming notes from family friends tipped-in which were to be opened during their travels. She has annotated many of the postcards, and photos. These albums, and her impressions, offer an invaluable cultural insight into travel during the Jazz Age for the well-to-do. In addition, there are several leaves in manuscript written in both pencil and pen of the prices and types of souvenirs purchased throughout Europe, including dolls, pennants, mosaics, many lead soldiers, a toy loom, toy boat, decks of cards, clothing, china, and many different types of jewelry. Harriet Merrill Dana Carroll would later attend Swarthmore college, graduate from Yale Nursing School in 1941, and eventually retire in Bethesda, Maryland in 1986. Samuel Trask Dana (1883-1978), was a world renowned forestry expert who graduated from Yale in 1907, entered the U.S. Forest Service where he began groundbreaking studies in the culture of renewable white pine and paper birch forests. He established several forest experimental stations intended to further research and promote the economic value of forests. He served in World War I, and from 1923 to 1927 was the director of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station in Amherst, Massachusetts where his most significant achievement was helping to organize the First World Forestry Conference. This Congress was significant because he succeeded in helping to establish an international body to compile and track forestry resources all over the world. Subsequently he became the first dean of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources which pioneered many trends in modern forestry. He served as chairman of the U.S. Timber Conservation Board, President of the Society of American Foresters, was appointed in 1958 by President Eisenhower to serve on the National Outdoor Recreation Review Commission, and also studied proposals to preserve California's redwood forests. …

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Approximately 275 postcards glued down, generally four to a page, on both sides of the album leaves. All of the cards are commercial and almost all have printed captions in English, Japanese, French or some combination of those languages. Most are black and white, some are color and a handful are blue tinted. There are several blank leaves at the end. Oblong Japanese lacquer-style album (35 x 26 cm.) The album cover is in decent shape but the album leaves open a bit stiffly (probably because the backstrip was recently reglued). The HMS Suffolk was a county class heavy cruiser in Great Britain's Royal Navy which was commissioned in 1928 and spent her first 11 years on Britain's "China Station." The album includes (in this order) 4 postcards of the HMS Suffolk, 4 of Colombo (Sri Lanka), 4 of Singapore, 18 of Hong Kong, 8 of Shanghai, 198 of Japan, 25 of the West Indies, and 19 of France and Monaco. Almost all of the Hong Kong cards are in color, ten of which feature the Peak Tram and Peak related views. The Shanghai cards are real photo black and white views, three of which are captioned. The Japanese cards are a mixture of color and black and white -- they depict several locales including Inland Sea (8), Shimizu (12), Mt. Fuji (10), Kobe (30), Ritsurin Koen in Takamatsu (12), Beppu (26), Japan with the Duke of Gloucester in 1929 (9 plus a free tram ride ticket), Tokyo (66), and 1923 earthquake damage in Yokohama and Tokyo (18). The West Indies cards depict Grenada (6 black & white) and Trinidad (19 -- all but a couple in color). The French cards are black and white and are of mostly coastal scenes in Cannes, Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu, Monte-Carlo, Antibes, and Menton.…

Hardcover. Condición: Good. About 150 photos (or photos of photos) and postcards, all firmly pasted down, two to a page on both sides of album leaves. Album leaves rather worn, with chipping along fore-edges. Some page rippling. Photos are black and white as are many of the postcards. Most of the photographic images, while appealing, are a bit faint and much less sharply detailed than one would like. No captions except for the printed captions on some of the postcards. The last 8 album leaves are unused. Undated but probably sometime in the first quarter of the 20th century. Moderate-sized oblong album covered in flexible patterned leather (25 x 18 cm.). Cover worn along edges and rubbed. The first 93 images, mostly photos rather than postcards, appear to relate to India or adjacent areas (a few seem Burmese to us, partly because the appearance of some of the temples). The next 7 photos and 11 postcards relate to Egypt or nearby arid settings followed by 12 postcards and 27 photos which relate to Greece. The final four images (all postcards) relate to China. The South Asian images, as loosely defined by us, begins with about 30 images that could be non-Indian followed by scenes of bathing in the Ganges, numerous interior and exterior images of various antiquities (including several of the Taj Mahal), a few elephants and a few other images. Our Egyptian images begin with four photos of an unidentified caravan featuring rather heavily laden camels, followed by postcard images mostly of antiquities (the Sphinx, pyramids, Karnak and Thebes). The Greek images provide a strong dose of antiquities and a few images of traditionally attired Greeks including a black and white photo of a gun-toting young man and a color postcard, captioned in part "Soldat Grec (Efzonaki)." The final four images are three color postcards of Chinese scenes and a black and white image of an indeterminately-located street scene.…

N.p. ca. 1900-1915. Black lacquer Japanese accordion album 34.5 x 27.5 cm., 4 post cards per page side,51 cards in all, very good, solid, mounted under threads, silk painted pages, cloth spine, some small chips to corners else solid. RARE ! *** *** *** . . . COLLECTION OF 51 EARLY KOREAN PICTORIAL POSTCARDS . . . BEAUTIFULLY CONTAINED IN A PERIOD JAPANESE LACQUER ALBUM . * This is an amazing and superb collection of fifty-one period black & white collotype photo postcards. Each card is slipped under orange threads to hold them in place, the last 4 cards inside the back cover are held down with old silver photo corners. . *** THE SUBJECTS: This collection was probably compiled by a Japanese who was working or visiting Chosen, Japan held Korea. The probable dates of the postcards range from about 1900-a dated post mark of 1912. . The collection covers some great rarities. A double-postcard panoramic view of Seoul, followed by other "bird's-eye views of Seoul, [Japanese] Governor-General's Residence, other government buildings, palace views, temples, gates, pagodas, main streets, parks, prostitute quarter, Keisang beauty, and a good number of women, girls, priest, dress, common people, itinerant sellers, street stalls, sellers, occupations, rural views, the Chosen Hotel & Korean Nobleman. . *** THE ALBUM. The album is black lacquer over wooden boards, typical of the turn-of-the-century -1920's type album. This one is however, very special, in that the thick pages are all silk gauze covered, and then color painted with lovely floral and other designs, then four threads are sewn in place to hold the corners of the postcards. The album has cloth covered pages that match the end coverings. It appears that a new spine of cloth was done at some time. The cover design sows a Japanese Rickshaw man pulling a Japanese woman in a rickshaw before a large Mt. Fuji. All of the painting is done in gold against a back background, with some touches of red to enhance here and there. The faces of the two people are "mother-of-pearl" and the man's face is complete and nice, while the woman passenger in the rickshaw has some loss and about half is present. . *** CONDITION OF THE LACQUER ALBUM: The album corners have lack some lacquer, and there are a few small cracks or bumps and scuffs to the front cover. The back cover has a few small pieces missing from the corners, back by and large in very nice condition. See also above "THE ALBUM" for other condition comments. . *** HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF KOREA: In 1910, an already militarily occupied Korea was a forced party to the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty. The treaty was signed by Lee Wan-Yong, who was given the General Power of Attorney by the Emperor. However, the Emperor is said to have not actually ratified the treaty according to Yi Tae-jin. There is a long dispute whether this treaty was legal or illegal due to its signing under duress, threat of force and bribes. . Korean resistance to the brutal Japanese occupation was manifested in the nonviolent March 1st Movement of 1919, during which 7,000 demonstrators were killed by Japanese police and military. The Korean liberation movement also spread to neighboring Manchuria and Siberia. . *** THE POSTCARDS: Captions in both English & Japanese, found inside of the " " marks, where these marks are absent, there was no caption. . 1. "VIEW OF SEOUL" A very rare double-panoramic black & white photo postcard, showing the old city, with just a few larger buildings, the balance are small houses, the center fold is intact which is quite RARE and unusual to find in such excellent condition. Being a double card, we count this as two cards. . 2. "BIRD'S EYE VEIW OF KEIJI CITY" . 3. "BIRD'S-EYES VIEW ON SEOUL" . 4. "BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF KEIJI CITY" . 5. "MAIN STREET. SEOUL" . 6 "TOKUSON MOHANJO OF GOVENOR GENERAL" . 7 "THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OFFICE CHOSEN" . 8. "THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT GENERAL OFFICE, SEOUL" . 9. "KOREAN-GOVERNMENT, KEIJO" .…
