This book examines the concept that tropical marine molluscan fauna evolve more slowly than their counterparts in temperate regions, a theory based on data from supposed Miocene-age mollusks. The author argues that the original Miocene age assignment was incorrect, instead suggesting a later Pliocene or possibly Pleistocene age, leading to the conclusion that tropical and temperate mollusks' evolutionary rates are similar. The original theory, proposed by Dickerson in 1921, has been frequently cited but never critically evaluated. Through stratigraphic and paleontological analysis of faunas collected since Dickerson's time, this book challenges the idea that tropical molluscan faunas evolve at a different rate than those in temperate regions, thereby expanding our understanding of the evolution and correlation of marine mollusks. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
