In 1960, Pope and John L. Ferris of Walnut Creek, California joined forces with Pablo Bush Romero and CEDAM in search for pirate hero Jean Lafitte's grave in Yucatan. They also visited the underground Toltec worship caves at Chichen Itza and helped raise cannon and other artifacts from sunken galleons in the Ucatan Channel. Pope recently returned to view those artifacts now on display at CEDAM's Museum in Akumal and found the Caribbean much as it was, still beckoning the stout-of-heart to the land of the Mayas.
