Cibber s Letter from Mr. Cibber, to Mr. Pope had appeared during the last week in July, 1742 and the present pamphlet is the first published reply to it, appearing on August 3, 1742. Norman Ault, in New Light on Pope (1949) categorically attributed it to Pope, noting stylistic footprints and arguing that such an immediate and personal defense was unlikely to come from anyone else. Pope (assuming he was the author) dismisses Cibber s criticism as proving only that "Mr. Pope s Papism and Jacobitism sticks in the Stomach of the loyal, protestant, sack-drinking Colley." Guerinot, pp. 329-330, noting this as "a defence of Pope against Cibber," and that Ault "attributed this to Pope." This second edition is uncommon, with ESTC recording six copies in the U.S.A. and only the University of Wales elsewhere. …
