The Weathervane Books edition of The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (Pollard abridgement, illustrated by Arthur Rackham) is a handsome mid‑20th‑century reissue of one of the most admired Rackham‑illustrated Arthurian volumes. It combines Alfred W. Pollard's elegant abridgement of Malory with Rackham's mature, atmospheric artwork. Pollard's abridgement (first published 1917) distils Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur into a clear, readable narrative while preserving the cadence and dignity of the fifteenth‑century prose. It is widely regarded as the definitive abridged version of Malory. The Weathervane Books reprint (1977-78) is a sturdy hardcover aimed at general readers and collectors who want Rackham's illustrations in an accessible modern binding. Ref A7 2. Pollard; Illustrated by Arthur Rackham, Published by The Macmillan Co., New York, 1926. 1st edition, 2nd printing. The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table is an abridged and retold version of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, edited by Alfred W. Pollard featuring classic Arthurian tales of King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Knights of the Round Table, often illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Pollard's goal was to make the complex Middle English text more accessible by "clearing away some of the underwoods" so the "great trees may be better seen" "some cloth wear, edge rubbing, inside clean and tight and very good".
